A Message from the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services

April 1st is Census Day:  Everyone Counts

Dear Parents:
Every ten years, the U.S. Census Bureau counts the population by collecting information about everyone living in a household. An online 2020 census questionnaire is available and will run from March 23 –July 31. When completing the survey there are two options to choose from:

Option 1:Go to my2020census.gov and complete your 2020 Census questionnaire online. The goal of the Census Bureau is that about six out of 10 households will fill out a form online. When completing the online questionnaire you will need your 12-digit Census ID, which is printed below the barcode on the front of the questionnaire you received. Please respond online to help conserve natural resources, save taxpayer money, and process data more efficiently.

Option 2: Complete and mail back the questionnaire in the postage-paid envelope.
The 2020 Census will be used to direct 1.5 trillion a year in funding to local programs such as:

  • Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program or (SNAP)
  • The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
  • The National School Lunch Program
  • Local schools, roads, emergency readiness and other public services
  • The number of seats South Carolina has in the U.S. House of Representatives
  • Political representation in Anderson County and at all levels of government
  • Redrawing voting districts in the electoral college

The Census Bureau has a free educational program called Statistics in Schools (SIS) that teaches children in a fun and informative way why the census is important. You can download information on the SIS website at www.census.gov/schools.

The census response is required by law, and answers are kept completely confidential. If you do not respond, a Census Bureau interviewer will be sent to your home to collect your answers in person. If you need help completing your 2020 Census questionnaire, please call toll-free 1-844-330-2020.

Best Regards,
Jerome A. Hudson,
Assistant Superintendent of Student Services
